Carbonara’s £1 Appeal
You may remember the story of Carbonara and her Pasta kittens, a known stray cat who gave birth to her kittens in her feeders house.
Sadly one of her kittens, Spaghetti , was born with gastroschisis and without urgent intricate surgery, he would not survive. Unfortunately, even though little spaghetti did survive the surgery, he sadly passed away upon recovery.
Carbonara has been an excellent mum to her three remaining kittens but a few weeks after birth we noticed that Carbonara had an unusually fast heart rate and took her to Northcote Vets for investigation.
A specialist scan of her chest revealed that Carbonara had a diaphragmatic hernia.
The diaphragm is a muscular partition which separates the abdomen from the chest. If a hole or tear in the diaphragm is present then the abdominal contents such as the stomach, liver and intestines can enter the chest cavity.
Because of the specialist surgery required Carbonara was referred to Leeds Veterinary Centre as an emergency.
Carbonara’s surgery was performed by wonderful and skilled vet James at Leeds Veterinary Centre who discovered that the diaphragmatic hernia was a congenital (birth defect) peritoneal-pericardial (around the heart/lung cavity) diaphragmatichernia.
This was probably made much worse during pregnancy and labour.
The diaphragm was repaired and had to be extended to allow room for all the abdominal organs including stomach, duodenum (first part), jejunum, ileum, liver, gallbladder, the tail of the pancreas, spleen, and the transverse colon, to return back to the abdomen.
Moving the abdominal organs has risks as the organs could have formed adhesions to the lungs, potentially cause inability of the lungs to inflate.
Careful monitoring of the heart and lungs were carried out and excess air had to be removed but the surgery went well.
Carbonara was a very brave girl and is now recovering for surgery back in the care of her foster family. She will need to have pain relief, antibiotics, close monitoring of her heart rate and lots of TLC.
As you can imagine Carbonaras care has so far cost in excess of £3000.
The surgery today alone has cost just over £2300.
Could you donate just £1.00 towards Carbonaras £1 coin appeal to help cover this very unexpected dent in our finances.
