New Arrivals: Hamish and Macbeth

This afternoon we had the arrival of two kittens, Hamish and Macbeth.

Prior to admission we asked all the usual questions about the circumstances of the kittens, as well as their health so we could ensure we were ready to take them in and provide the high level of care that we pride ourselves on.

Unfortunately we were entirely misled, advised that these were two kittens that had been found 8 weeks previously in the “finder’s” garden, but were in good health, with no issues that we needed to be aware of.

On arrival it was instantly apparent that these kittens were in very poor health. Both had incredibly sore looking eyes, were flu-ey and were generally in terrible condition including a terrible flea infestation, worms and anemia.

On doing a thorough assessment, we believe these kittens to have been bred, in the style of ‘Scottish Fold’ cats. These cats are known for having significant health problems due to a genetic mutation that has been intentionally bred into them. This causes the folded ears, which is a marker of a serious, life-long condition called osteochondrodysplasia. This disease affects the development of cartilage, and almost always leads to ‘severe and painful’ arthritis. The British Veterinary Association have said that the breeding of these cats should be banned, due to these health issues.

These kittens have had emergency care this afternoon and been booked in for urgent vet assessments tomorrow due to the awful condition that they are in, and will likely need emergency (and expensive) surgery on their eyes and a high level of initial care.

If you would like to donate towards the vet care at the rescue that would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE NOTE THESE KITTENS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR ADOPTION ANYTIME SOON…. ALL OUR EFFORTS WILL BE PUT INTO NURSING THESE GRAVELY ILL KITTENS AND NOT ENQUIRIES INTO THEIR FUTURE ADOPTION.
